PVC Compression Fittings (1)

PVC compression fittings may be a quick-fix in some emergency situations that require a temporary or even permanent repair in a hurry, with less down time. If you need to add a line by teeing into an existing line, no problem; just prepare your tee (either glue socket outlet or female pipe threaded outlet) by adding a valve, then turn off your water, cut your line and insert the tee, tighten the compression ends and turn the water back on. Use two male adapters and a threaded valve to quickly add a shut off when needed. Need other PVC fittings? View the best selection of PVC fittings on the Internet!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. "Are there any precautions to take when using these compression PVC fittings?"
A. Yes, the pipe should be secured to prevent movement that can cause the pipe to separate from the fitting. This can be accomplished by strapping it to stakes on each side of the fitting or blocking the ends of the run where it stops or changes direction.

Q. "How do I use these PVC compression couplings?"
A. Watch as Aden shows you how to use both the standard and Spring Locking compression couplings to repair your PVC pipe.

Q. "Do you recommend using PTFE thread sealing tape on PVC threads?"
A. Lasco Manufacturing says: "It is wrong to add excess bulk to a threaded joint by wrapping male threads in Teflon® tape. It is wrong to make over-tightening easier by using Teflon® tape..." We have seen much similar PTFE thread sealing tape used satisfactorily but cannot (due to liability potential) recommend that you use PTFE thread sealing tape (pipe dope designed for PVC, such as we offer above, is acceptable).

Q. "What does the term spigot mean?"
A. The term spigot is used to describe one side of a fitting that is the same outside diameter of pipe and is used to glue directly into PVC fittings (slip or socket end).

Please note: While we strive to ensure every product we label as "Made in the USA" really is 100% made in the USA, it is also important to understand that sometimes manufacturers make changes to their products, or for various reasons may receive components or materials that they would normally purchase domestically from an overseas supplier - and they don't necessarily let distributors (like us!) know that they've changed something about the product or where it is manufactured.

If you receive a product that PlumbingSupply.com® says is "Made in the USA" and the product states it was manufactured elsewhere, please contact us. We will happily replace or refund your purchase to your satisfaction.

FAQs

How well do PVC compression fittings work? ›

While threaded connections are common and often hold up well, they are also often prone to leaks. In some cases, threaded connections can be under or over-tightened, resulting in such leaks. A compression fitting does not have this problem. Socket fittings require PVC cement and primer.

How much pressure can a PVC compression fitting hold? ›

200 psi pressure rated for all sizes.

How do I know if my compression fitting is tight enough? ›

How Tight Should a Compression Fitting Be? Compression fittings should be tight enough to create a watertight seal but not so tight that the pipe warps or the thread is damaged as this could encourage leaks and make the fittings much harder to remove later. Proceed with caution.

How tight should PVC compression fittings be? ›

The right way to assemble a threaded PVC joint-Schedule 40 or 80 is finger tight plus one to two turns-no more. Two turns past finger tight plus the stress of the system pressure is within the tensile strength of one-inch PVC.

Do PVC compression couplings leak? ›

A compression fitting connects two pipes or connects a pipe to a fixture. It has three main parts: a compression seat, a nut, and a ring. A compression fitting can leak if one of these pieces isn't correctly installed or becomes damaged.

Do professional plumbers use compression fittings? ›

Do professional plumbers use compression fittings? Yes, professional plumbers use compression fittings in a variety of applications. Domestic, Commercial, and Industrial. They're particularly useful in situations where it's not practical or possible to solder the pipes together.

How many PSI is a compression fitting good for? ›

Compression Fittings Features

Working Pressure: 1/8, 3/16: 400 psi. 1/4, 5/16: 300 psi. 3/8, 1/2: 200 psi.

How do I stop my PVC compression fitting from leaking? ›

Most professional plumbers would agree that the best thing to do is loosen and retighten the compression nut. Before you attempt this, make sure to turn off your water, as leaving it on will cause a slippery mess.

Can you over tighten a compression fitting? ›

The tubing will bulge and stick inside of the fitting if the ferrules are overly secure. If you can't disassemble the valve or fitting, it's a good indicator that the connection is much too tight. The only thing to do in this instance is to remove and replace the fitting in question.

How do you know how much compression you need? ›

Step 1: Choose The Compression Level

A good rule of thumb to follow is: 15-20 mmHg: Great for daily wear, travel, and sports. They help improve circulation without being too tight. 20-30 mmHg: Great for sports recovery, daily wear, medical recovery, and to manage mild symptoms of varicose and spider veins.

Do you hand tighten compression fittings? ›

The thread of the end of the nut must face outward. Step 2: Insert the tube into the compression fitting. Be sure the tube is bottomed on the fitting shoulder. Step 3: Assemble the nut to the fitting body and tighten it to hand tight.

Can you over tighten PVC fittings? ›

Additional turns of the fitting cause the female threads to stretch, however. This stretching puts strain on the threads, and if tightened too much, there's a chance the threading can split or break. This is why it is important to remember not to over-tighten PVC fittings.

Why not to use compression fittings? ›

Disadvantages: Compression fittings are bulkier and can be considered less aesthetically pleasing compared to the soldered joint. Compression fittings are not nearly as robust as soldered fittings making them much more sensitive to powerful stresses.

How to stop a PVC compression fitting from leaking? ›

Most professional plumbers would agree that the best thing to do is loosen and retighten the compression nut.

What is the leak rate of compression fittings? ›

Compression fittings generally have low leak rate (generally around 0.4 g yr-1 per fitting on average) and the second shortest assembly time but are the most prone to assembly failure and the second most prone to leaks after assembly.
