Check out this past exhibition poster - Faith Ringgold: A Twenty Five-Year Survey. January 3 - February 28, 1991. The exhibition was a traveling exhibition and a survey of the work of black feminist artist Faith Ringgold. It included paintings, masks, and soft sculptures, as well as the story quilts for which she is best known. The exhibition provided the first in-depth focus on these quilts, a medium that grew out of Ringgold’s need “to tell stories not with pictures of symbols alone, but with words.” To learn more about the artist and a popular work in our collection view this video - https://buff.ly/3VYK5p7 #RCCAM #RichardandCaroleco*cksArtMuseum #Juneteenth #BlackHistory #Throwback #MiamiUniversity #MiamiOH #artmuseum #OxfordOH

Collections Connections with Collections Manager / Registrar Jenn LaqualiaThis week is National Pollinators Week This print by Edward Donovan (English, 1768-1837) features a Papilio peranthus, more commonly known as a Swift Peaco*ck Swallowtail, which is a native butterfly found on the Indonesian islands. But you don't have to BEE in Indonesia to see nature's pollinators! In fact, you can look right outside your window. In addition to hummingbirds, bees, and bats, did you know that Ohio has over 130 species of butterflies? Butterflies and other pollinators play an extremely important role in our ecosystems, and there are many ways you can help protect these beautiful little helpers. Paul Cadmus, one of the first openly gay artists who unabashedly made artworks with queer themes, visited the art museum back in 1980. He visited at the end of his exhibition here and presented David Berreth with a print. Currently, the Richard and Carole Cox Art Museum houses 27 of his works and preserves Cadmus as an influential artist of our modern times.Check out this blog post about his work and the exhibition - https://buff.ly/4aFlSb9 #Pride #PrideMonth #Historic #ThrowBack #richardandcaroleco*cksartmuseum #miamiuniversity #MiamiOH #OxfordOH #artmuseum

Our galleries are now closed and will reopen with brand-new exhibitions in late August. As a reminder, we have lots of interesting content online at www.MiamiOH.edu/ArtMuseum and our sculpture park and grounds are open year-round.

FROM THE COLLECTION / HERITAGE MONTH HIGHLIGHT Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders Heritage (AANHPI) Month Iatmul people, Sepik River Area, Papua New Guinea"Crocodile Spirit Figure", 1970sWood and natural fibers, 25 x 9 (diam.) inchesGift of Dr. Deborah Henderson and Mr. Jon Barlow Hudson2013.44The Iatmul people live near the Sepik River in northwestern Papua New Guinea. One Iatmul creation story tells of a crocodile who retrieved a clump of mud from the primordial ocean and created the first island. The crocodile was responsible for holding up the islands of the Sepik River and is commonly associated with Iatmul men as defenders and maintainers of the land. It is possible that this carved wood sculpture of a seated crocodile had ritualistic value, as young men participated in a ritual to be recognized as a “crocodile,” or adult male. The process also entails scarification, the patterned scarring of the body, as represented on the reverse of the wood figure.More info and resources on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders Heritage (AANHPI) Month may be found at https://buff.ly/2FwprCh [LINK IN BIO]#aapiheritagemonth #AAPI #RCCAMCollection

FROM THE COLLECTION / HERITAGE MONTH HIGHLIGHTJewish American HeritageHarvey Breverman (American, b. 1934)"Mystery of a Prayer Shawl II" (Sanguine), 1986Conté crayon on paper, 44 1/2 x 30 1/4 inchesGift of Ken and June Shafor1987.86Harvey Breverman’s identity as a Jew and an artist influences the way he portrays individuals practicing religious devotion in his work. The tallit gadol (tah-leet gah-dole), “big prayer shawl,” is traditionally worn draped over the head, shoulders and back of the worshiper. Before adorning oneself, a blessing is spoken and the garment is wrapped around the worshiper for ritual purposes. The tassels/fringes or tzitzit (tzee-tzeet) remind Jewish followers to remember God and his commandments. The figure faces away, focusing on the tallit in active use of assisting devotion and inspiring contemplation of the garment.
