Flights to Kefaloinia
Direct flights to Kefalonia International Airport (EFL) operate from most major European cities, especially in the Summer. Alternatively, you can fly into Athens International on the mainland and take a 45-minute domestic flight from there to Kefalonia.
Though other Greek islands may trump Cephalonia in terms of cosmopolitan edge, what this isle does particularly well is a sense of authenticity. It is the largest of the Ionian islands and rarely feels crowded, even in summer. It has also managed to avoid being spoiled by too much development.
The best way to get to Kefalonia from mainland Greece is via the ports of Patras or Kyllini in Western Greece. Indirectly, you can also travel to Kefalonia from the Italian port of Bari! Patra and Kyllini are in the Peloponnese and you can get there by car or public bus from Athens in around 3 hours.
First, you'll need to drive from Athens to Killini, a port in mainland Greece 3 hours, 28 minutes drive from Athens. You'll then need to board a car ferry from Killini to the port of Poros in Kefalonia. The ferry takes around 1 hour 20 minutes and runs up to 4 times a day.
Kilini is located in the northwestern part of the Peloponnese, 316 km from the International Airport of Athens and 287 km from the capital's center. How long is the duration of the trip? The crossing from Kilini to Kefalonia (Poros) lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes.

By Air to Kefalonia
Flights operate daily direct from the UK during the summer season (May to September), as well as from several other countries. The flight time is around 3.5 hours from London. There is a reduced service in April, October and November, while flights to the island are limited in the winter months.
Kefalonia is placed just in front of Corynth gulf entrance, at a distance of 30 km from the west coast of the Peloponnese. In Kefalonia the coasts are really jagged and there are many gulfs: Sami gulf and Antisamos gulf in the north, Argostoli gulf in the center and Lourdas gulf in the south.
The public buses in Kefalonia have frequent routes between the tourist spots and reach numerous options. However, for visitors who want to explore the island at their own pace and/or visit more isolated places, the car is the only way to do so.
There is currently just the 1 ferry route running between Kefalonia and Italy operated by 1 ferry company โ Ventouris Ferries. The Sami to Bari ferry crossing operates Weekly with a scheduled sailing duration from about 18 hours 15 minutes.
Hiring a Car is the best way to explore Cephalonia island. However, driving in a foreign country might be a little different from home due to our hilly landscape and narrow roads.
Avoid Lassi and Skala, if you don't want too touristy these are the two main tourist areas on the island. One advantage of Lassi is it close to the capital Argostoli, which is true Greece.
Large and one of the most popular islands of Greece, it is a big island full of majestic scenery, impressive points of interest and lovely accommodations of all kinds. In brief, we recommend staying a minimum of 3 days on the island as it is home to plentiful sights.
We have been to both Cephalonia and Crete. We prefer Cephalonia for a couple of reasons. One is the greenness of the islands and secondly with only two weeks at a time we felt Crete was too big for us. We only scratched the surface of the North coast.
Two cultural attractions, the fishing villages of Fiscardo and Assos, and other natural attractions, including Melissani underground lake, Drogarati cave and Myrtos beach, have helped popularize Cephalonia. What is the crime rate in Kefalonia?
