Is it common for small planes to crash?
Nevertheless, NTSB statistics reveal that in contrast to the safety record of commercial airplanes, small private planes average five accidents per day, accounting for nearly 500 American deaths in small planes each year.
Small planes are involved in more accidents. "Statistically, yes, they do [happen] quite a bit more frequently," Pereira said. For example, in 2019, there were 1,220 accidents, 233 of which were deadly. Commercial planes had 40 accidents in 2019, two of which included fatalities.
The odds of a plane crashing are not common – at least not nowadays. A rough estimate of the probability of an airplane going down due to an emergency is about 1 in 11 million, meaning it would take us quite a few lifetimes before actually experiencing a plane crash.
Smaller planes are more vulnerable to turbulence and other natural hazards in flight. Roughly two aviation accidents occur each week due to losing fuel mid-flight. Wildlife can sometimes pose a threat to a smaller plane.
Pilot error is the number one cause of aviation accidents. Piloting an aircraft requires lengthy training, a knowledge of the mechanical components of an aircraft, and hand-eye coordination skills to effectively and safely maneuver an aircraft.
However, it must be understood that compared to automobiles, small aeroplanes are still relatively safe. The chances of a pilot being involved in a fatal accident are rather slim, however, the danger is more pronounced in the event that an accident does occur.
Driving vs. Flying By the Numbers
The overall fatality risk is 0.23% — you would need to fly every day for more than 10,000 years to be in a fatal plane crash. On the other hand, the chances of dying in a car collision are about 1 in 101, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
So far, in 2022, the number of noncommercial fixed-wing accidents is down by about 1/3 (from around 1000 per year to a forecast of 660 in 2022) from previous years. Part of this is due to the lower number of flights, but some are due to increased vigilance by pilots.
“The fuel tanks are severely flawed. The NTSB would prefer to use pilot error than where the problem really lies,” Scovill said. Scovill points to one of the many routine safety checks pilots do before flying. It's called “sumping the fuel.” That's how small plane pilots check for water.
Are small planes less safe than larger? It might seem that way, but there are other contributing factors. "In a nutshell, the size of an airplane is not in any way linked to safety," explains Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at StretegivAero Research.
Do small planes or helicopters crash more?
Published figures vary, but they all tend to show that while helicopters do crash slightly more often than planes, the difference is very small. Helicopters are not inherently dangerous. But nevertheless, helicopter crashes do happen.
According to a study published by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, nearly half of all aviation accidents occur during the final approach or landing and 14 percent occur during takeoff or initial climb.
Additionally, the safety of traveling in chartered and privately operated aircraft falls far short of what passengers of commercial aircraft can expect; the numbers of accidents and fatalities bear this out: over the past 20 years, charter and private aircraft have a far greater probability of crashing over commercial ...

On the evening of August 7, 2020, Air India Express Flight 1344 crashed with 190 people on board during a botched landing attempt at Kozhikode Calicut International Airport.
Nonetheless, a TIME investigation that looked at 35 years of aircraft accident data found the middle rear seats of an aircraft had the lowest fatality rate: 28%, compared with 44% for the middle aisle seats. This logically makes sense too.
Private Jet | Max Range | Max Flight Time |
---|---|---|
Light Jet | 1000-1800 miles | 3-4 hours |
Midsize Jet | 2000-3000 miles | 4-6 hours |
Super Midsize Jet | 3000-4000 miles | 5-7 hours |
Large Cabin Jet | 4000+ miles | 6-10+ hours |
Although turbulence occurs in both large and small planes, it is typically worse in smaller planes because they weigh less, and so more likely to move in line with the air and thus feel turbulence more.
While it all comes down to your preferences, daytime flying has the upper hand when it comes to visibility. Because of the sunlight, any possible obstructions, such as rocks or mountains, are far easier to spot, making the likelihood of accidents much less and daytime flying the safer option by far.
According to the experts, the chances of being in a plane crash flying in a modern aircraft is about one in 11 million, and even though these odds sound crazy, it really is true that flying is one of the safest ways to travel.
What is the fatality rate for private pilots?
Private Plane Accident Facts
On a large, commercial airliner, fewer than 0.01 fatalities per 100,000 hours flying occur. On private aviation craft, however, that ratio jumps to more than 2.3 fatalities per 100,000 hours flown.

The top 10 countries with the highest number of fatal civil airliner accidents from 1945 to 2021 are the United States, Russia, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, United Kingdom, France, Indonesia, Mexico, and India.
Cessnas and Pipers. In fact, the top 15 aircraft models in total crashes are all made by those two manufacturers – and nine of the top ten are Cessnas. The Cessna 152 was involved in nearly 800 more crashes than any other aircraft.
Commercial transport passenger planes are hit by lightning an average of one or two times a year. They are designed and built to have conducting paths through the plane to take the lightning strike and conduct the currents.
