What are the most common securities traded?
Stocks, bonds, preferred shares, and ETFs are among the most common examples of marketable securities. Money market instruments, futures, options, and hedge fund investments can also be marketable securities.
The most prevalent type of equity security is common stock. And the characteristic that most defines an equity security—differentiating it from most other types of securities—is ownership. If you own an equity security, your shares represent part ownership of the issuing company.
The four types of security are debt, equity, derivative, and hybrid securities. Holders of equity securities (e.g., shares) can benefit from capital gains by selling stocks.
A marketable security is any type of stock, bond, or other security that can easily be bought or sold on a public exchange. For example, the shares of public companies can be traded on a stock exchange, and treasury bonds can be bought and sold on the bond market.

Common stock is a security that represents ownership in a corporation. In a liquidation, common stockholders receive whatever assets remain after creditors, bondholders, and preferred stockholders are paid.

The term "security" is defined broadly to include a wide array of investments, such as stocks, bonds, notes, debentures, limited partnership interests, oil and gas interests, and investment contracts.
Briefly, an ETF is a basket of securities that you can buy or sell through a brokerage firm on a stock exchange. ETFs are offered on virtually every conceivable asset class from traditional investments to so-called alternative assets like commodities or currencies.
What securities are in an ETF?
ETFs let you access a diverse mix of asset classes, including domestic and international stocks, bonds, and commodities.
In the investing sense, securities are broadly defined as financial instruments that hold value and can be traded between parties. In other words, security is a catch-all term for stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds or other types of investments you can buy or sell.
Equity holders of stock are often called “stockholders” or “shareholders.” Different classes of stock, such as common stock (more commonly issued to founders) and preferred stock (more commonly issued to outside investors), have different voting and economic rights.
Launched in January 1993 by State Street Global Advisors with just $6.5 million in assets, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) is today the world's largest, with assets in excess of $120 billion. It is also the most actively traded security on the planet.
The most traded stock in the US in 2022 was Apple.

Common stock is a class of stock that represents equity ownership in a corporation. Owners of common stock, called shareholders, are entitled to the following rights: Voting rights to elect the members of the board of directors. Typically, shareholders may cast one vote per share.
Buying equity securities, or stocks, means you are buying a very small ownership stake in a company. While bondholders lend money with interest, equity holders purchase small stakes in companies on the belief that the company performs well and the value of the shares purchased will increase.
Bonds are debt instruments. They are a contract between a borrower and a lender in which the borrower commits to make payments of principal and interest to the lender, on specific dates.
- Equity securities – which includes stocks.
- Debt securities – which includes bonds and banknotes.
- Derivatives – which includes options and futures.
Is a bond a security?
Bonds and stocks are both securities, but the major difference between the two is that (capital) stockholders have an equity stake in a company (i.e. they are owners), whereas bondholders have a creditor stake in a company (i.e. they are lenders).
The biggest difference between stocks and bonds is that with stocks, you own a small portion of a company, whereas with bonds, you loan a company or government money. Another difference is how they make money: stocks must grow in resale value, while bonds pay fixed interest over time.
Certificates of deposit (CDs) and bonds are both debt-based, fixed-income securities that investors hold until their maturity dates.
Like stocks, mutual funds are considered equity securities because investors purchase shares that correlate to an ownership stake in the fund as a whole.
Stocks offer an opportunity for higher long-term returns compared with bonds but come with greater risk. Bonds are generally more stable than stocks but have provided lower long-term returns.
