Whole30 Trader Joe's Grocery Guide: Complete Whole30 Shopping List - Whole Kitchen Sink (2024)

This is a complete shopping guide to every Whole30 compliant and Whole30 Approved products at Trader Joe’s that are available. Trader Joe’s Whole30 items are always growing and getting better. There’s so much you can get just at this store and it makes grocery shopping so easy!

What Whole30 Items Can You Get At Trader Joe’s?

I always love their frozen veggie section and it’s awesome that they have their own brand of flavored sparking water, compliant deli turkey, and Whole30 compliant green goddess salad dressing!

They of course carry all the normal veggie options, but what I really like about Trader Joe’s is that they have more affordable and more fun versions of prepped veggies than Whole Foods does. The cauliflower rice, sweet potato ribbons, jicamasticks, butternut squash cubes and zig-zags make getting your veggies in way more appealing sometimes. Not to mention, saves you a bunch of time chopping and prepping.

Check out my Fresh Thyme Whole30 Products, Walmart Whole30 Shopping Guide &50+ Whole30 Target Staples, too!

They have an awesome selection of Whole30 compliant frozen veggies! Trader Joe’s has Whole30 compliant frozen green chilis which is great for slow cooker or instant pot pork verde. The bags of red, yellow and green bell peppers are my favorite to keep on hand. Talk about easy weeknight burrito bowls or quick frittatas.

Along with the frozen carrot spirals, they also have frozen zoodles (AKA zucchini noodles). I’m so happy you can get these in stores now for everyone who doesn’t have a spiralizer or wants to save some time by not having to use it. Almost all of the plain frozen veggies at Trader Joe’s are A-OK for Whole30.

While Trader Joe’s isn’t the place I can go to get all of my meat products, they do have some good options! The Chile lime chicken burgers are super cheap and really good, and you can only get them at Trader Joe’s, unlike the Tuna that you can get almost anywhere.

They also carry the staples like chicken, ground beef, steak, etc., along with Applegate hot dogs.

Another perk that Trader Joe’s has over other places are these fully cooked meats! Grass fed beef roast, along with the fully cooked pork belly are Whole30 compliant and really great to either know you can run in and pick up on a busy night, or have on hand to throw something together when you don’t want to cook.

Trader Joe’s offers hard boiled eggs that are already peeled and ready to eat out of the bag. The only ingredients are eggs!

Trader Joe’s offers a Whole30 compliant bacon, but make sure to check the ingredients. Look for the No Sugar Dry Rubbed Uncured Bacon, as this is the only Whole30 compliant bacon at Trader Joe’s.

Another example of some great meat options you can find are the Sweet Italian Chicken Sausages from the Trader Joe’s brand. Along with the new (to me!) Whole30 Trader Joe’s deli turkey meat with squeaky clean ingredients!

The ingredients are just turkey, salt and water!

Trader Joe’s offers two Whole30 compliant almond milk varieties. Their Trader Joe’s brand unsweetened almond milk and unsweetened vanilla almond milk are both a-ok!

Check out my list of Whole30 compliant almond milk for a complete guide to where to get Whole30 almond milk!

There’s plenty of pantry staples to stock up on too while you’re there. They have really reasonably priced oils and fats. The ghee, coconut milk and coconut cream is a good budget option, and there’s lots of different types of oils available! They have compliant chicken and vegetable stock now, which is new (to me)!

Other Whole30 pantry staples always include almond butter, coconut aminos for Asian dishes, almond meal for making meatballs, salsa for Mexican inspired meals or crock pot salsa chicken. Pssst.. they’re compliant guacamole options in the fridge section if you’re making Mexican tonight!

A few other of my fave Trader Joe’s staples during a Whole30 include their spice blends, of course the “everything but the bagel” seasoning, along with the seasoning salt! I used to love Lowry’s, but since that’s out, this seasoning salt makes up for it!

Along with the compliant nut butters you’ll find at Trader Joe’s for your Whole30, they also have compliant tahini which makes great creamy sauces, dressings or veggie dips.

Whole30 Trader Joe’s options also include horseradish, which is sometimes an ingredient hard to find elsewhere. I also oftenpurchase minced garlic jars and some bulk nuts at Trader Joe’s too to have for quick options, or for topping my salads with.

Check out my Whole30Everything But the Bagel Chicken Wings!

Other staple items that Trader Joe’s has that are Whole30 compliant are a few different types of mustard. Deli style, plain yellow mustard and dijon are all Whole30 under the Trader Joe’s brand.

I’m happy they have some compliant bars at Trader Joe’s too. It really makes life easier when I can get all of these things in the same place. They had almost every flavor of RXBAR, which was awesome, and only a handful of compliant Lara Bars.

Portable, on-the-go protein options at Trader Joe’s include Epic Bars and Chomps grass fed beef sticks, among others. It’s so fun to see official Whole30 Approved companies in Trader Joe’s!

A few packaged items for on-the-go options that are some of my favorites are the apple sauce pouches at Trader Joe’s. They’re really cheap and are compliant in a few different flavors. They also have packaged dried fruit!

As I mentioned at the beginning, Trader Joe’s has their own Whole30 compliant sparkling water, but they also carry Spindrift and a few other brands! Between the different Whole30 compliant flours, canned goods, oils, spices, and freezer meats and veggies, you’ll be pretty well stocked from your trip to Trader Joe’s to tackle your Whole30!

Not sure Bailey if this has been brought up before but while these posts are great, searching it is a chore. Putting together some type of searchable database that shows which stores the items can be bought at would be an amazing improvement. An app would of course be best since a lot of those are very mediocre at best.

Thanks for the feedback! The ROI on my time and resources it would take developing something so sophisticated for something that’s just meant to be a helpful blog post as to what is available at Trader Joe’s is just not there. That, and things are continually changing, new products added, other products not being sold anymore- it would turn into my full time job with no return for me to keep up with something like that, and that’s not a goal of mine. I’ll possibly do a PDF download of the items at some point, but even those take hours upon hours and wouldn’t be able to be kept updated once someone downloaded it. If it’s too taxing for you to scroll through the list, you can just head to the store instead, or you could create one! 🙂 Hope you understand!

Bailey, I am not on any salt or dietary restrictions. But is Na+ a concern on Whole30?

    Reply

    • paleobailey says

Sodium isn’t a concern. The Whole30 is naturally a low-sodium program when compared to the amount of sodium the average person person is consuming in a day through processed foods. The idea is that you’re cooking all real food, and usually in your own home, dramatically reducing the amount of sodium. While you generally shouldn’t add 4 tablespoons of table salt to each meal, the Whole30’s recommendation is that adding salt to your meals for taste is just fine and you’ll still be consuming less than previously. 🙂

FAQs

Are bananas Whole30 approved? ›

What about bananas? Yes, both pickles and bananas are allowed on Whole30. Yet if they are a potential trigger food for you (for instance, the sweetness of bananas sets off a craving for other treats or makes you want to binge on the fruit), then you may consider including them on your “don't eat” list.

Is everything but the bagel seasoning Whole30 approved? ›

It spruces up avocados, stir fries and even fish tacos! If you can season it, you can season it with this. This Homemade Everything But the Bagel Seasoning is appropriate for any dietary lifestyle. It's Paleo, Whole30 compliant, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and sugar-free.

Is hummus OK on Whole30? ›

Can you have canned tomatoes on Whole30? ›

Citric acid is found naturally in citrus fruits, especially lemons and limes. It is commonly added to canned or jarred foods like tomatoes or olives as a preservative and pH buffer, and it's perfectly compatible with the Whole30.

Is peanut butter ok on Whole30? ›

Though peanuts and peanut butter aren't allowed on the Whole30 program, other nuts and nut butters are. Cashew butter is loaded with nutrients like healthy fats, magnesium, manganese, and copper.

What is the hardest day of Whole30? ›

On Days 10 and 11, you are statistically the most likely to quit your Whole30. (That's why they're “the hardest days.”) By this point, the newness of the program has worn off, and though you've made it through most of the unpleasant physical milestones, you've yet to experience significant benefits.

Can you eat oatmeal on Whole30? ›

Sugars, grains, dairy, alcohol, anything processed, and — the tricky part —anything that resembles those foods (no Paleo pancakes, gluten-free oats, or Whole30-approved cupcakes allowed). Since yogurt, cereal, toast, and even oatmeal are off the table, breakfast tends to be the toughest meal on the program.

Can you have honey on the Whole30 diet? ›

The Whole30 diet plan requires you to strictly avoid eating any source of added sugars, including real and artificial sugar. Thus, maple syrup, coconut sugar, agave nectar, honey, Nutrasweet, stevia, Splenda, xylitol, and other sources of sugar must be eliminated.

What is the Whole30 rice alternative? ›

We can't emphasize this enough — a bag of cauliflower rice should be a staple in your freezer or fridge, especially during the Whole30. Mix it with veggies and top with a protein, and you've got a hearty meal.

What is the one bite rule on Whole30? ›

I encourage you to read the whole post (and the experience that prompted it), but I'll summarize it here: If you get one bite into a less healthy treat and realize it's not worth it, stop eating.

Why are there no beans on Whole30? ›

Whole30 doesn't allow beans based on the idea that they contain "anti-nutrients" like phytates. Phytates are compounds found in plants that can potentially block the body's absorption of important minerals like magnesium, iron, and calcium.

What Whole30 menu items to order at Chick-fil-A: It's probably best to skip Chick-fil-A altogether during your Whole30, Yawitz says. No pasta recreations are allowed on the Whole30, per the Pancake Rule. However, single-ingredient veggie “noodles” such as spaghetti squash noodles or spiralized zucchini noodles are compatible and easy!

What is the 30/30/30 weight loss? ›

The 30-30-30 rule involves eating 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up, followed by 30 minutes of low-intensity, steady state cardiovascular exercise. Beyond these steps, the 30-30-30 method doesn't require any changes to other meals or behaviors, restrictions or counting calories.

What if I eat 30 bananas a day? ›

Eating too many bananas or other high-potassium foods can cause excess potassium in the body, also called hyperkalemia. This can cause serious health problems, including heart issues. While most people wouldn't be able to stomach the number of bananas necessary to cause this to happen, it's something to be mindful of.

Why are potatoes OK on Whole30? ›

Potatoes of all varieties are real, nutrient-dense foods. (It's a myth that all white foods are nutritionally barren.) The original exclusion of white potatoes was pretty arbitrary on our end—which we fully admitted in the Whole30 program rules.
