How many days off do Germans get?
According to the Federal Holidays Act, all employees in Germany with a 5-day week are entitled to a minimum of 20 vacation days per year. Most collective agreements, however, include entitlements to larger numbers of days.
Employees are entitled to a minimum of 24 days off for a 6-day work week and 20 days for a 5-day one. In reality, most employees receive 25-30 days of leave, even on a 5-day workweek.
Something that's illegal is working on Sundays or national holidays. This means that an average working week runs from Monday to Saturday (in office jobs rather Friday). It won't take you long to realise that Sundays are absolute rest days in Germany - and that you won't even be able to do your groceries.
Legal limits to working hours in Germany
The working week runs from Monday to Saturday, and employees must not work more than 48 hours per week. This can be extended to 10 hours per day, if within six months (or 24 weeks) the overall average working time does not exceed eight hours per day.
Working Hours in Germany
Legal working days in Germany are from Monday to Saturday, but for most workers, a standard work week is from 8 or 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Employees are allowed to work up to 10 hours per day, as long as the total weekly work time is not longer than 48 hours.
Monday to Saturday are considered the legal working days, but most employees typically work from Monday to Friday. Workdays usually start between 8-9 am and finish between 5-6 pm. Lunch breaks are 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Iceland. Cold little Iceland – a country with just over 350,000 people living in it – actually has more workers working a four-day workweek than almost anywhere else in the world. After running one of the world's largest and longest trials into the four-day workweek between 2015 and 2019, it seems to have caught on.
Work on Sundays and public holidays is generally prohibited. There are exceptions available for workers in the service industry. However, work on Sundays has to be compensated for by corresponding time off within the next two weeks (or eight weeks in the case of work on public holidays).

As of 2022, the average annual wage of Germany was 45,457 euros per year, a growth of almost 6,000 Euros when compared with 2000. From 2000 until 2007, wages rose by less than a thousand euros, with wage growth accelerating mainly in the period after 2010.
Labour law prohibits taking the break at the end of the day's work in order to leave earlier. Breaks are not considered working time and are therefore not paid.
As a rule, you receive sick pay from the day on which a doctor has confirmed your illness, and only for as long as the doctor's note is valid. You must turn up to appointments for medical examinations. If you do not go the doctor despite having an appointment, the payment of the sick pay can be stopped.
Salaries are paid monthly.
Legal working days in Germany are from Monday to Saturday, but for most workers, a standard work week is from 8 or 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
Thanks to higher productivity, German workers work less than many others in the world. Despite an economic slowdown and labor shortages, a discussion has emerged about cutting working hours even further.
Punctuality and order are also deeply ingrained in the German work culture. Germans place a high value on being on time and emphasise the role of organisation and structure in all areas of life. They take pride in achieving high levels of performance and productivity by making hard work and dedication a top priority.
Secondary employment is generally permitted in Germany and does not have to be approved by the 'main' employer. Secondary employment can take the following forms: another salaried employment relationship with another employer; or. a freelance employment relationship (self-employed secondary employment).
Can I refuse overtime in Germany?
For some provisions, if they're not regulated in the employment contract, the legal standards apply (e.g. notice periods). However, this is not the case for overtime – if there is no provision for overtime in the contract, the employee is free to refuse to work extra hours.
One company in Germany is letting employees work five hours a day — as long as they don't mind giving up their phones. The Wall Street Journal's Eric Morath recently reported on Rheingans Digital Enabler, a Bielefeld-based consulting firm that only operates five hours a day.
The average weekly hours worked on the main job in Germany saw no significant changes in 2021 in comparison to the previous year 2020 and remained at around 34.57 hours. However, 2021 marked the second consecutive increase of the average weekly hours worked.
4 Day Work Week in Japan
Although in the past Japan has been known for an intense working culture, recently the country has released new guidelines encouraging employers to move to 4 day work weeks. The idea of a 4 day work week has been proposed in the past and implemented by some companies, such as Microsoft Japan.
You cannot take your empty glass bottles to the containers where you should deposit them. In some apartments it is forbidden to use the vacuum cleaner, so you have to wait until Monday. Hammering or drilling will annoy your neighbors, so don't do any DIY project on a Sunday. Better don't do any loud party.
