Do any states have no income and no sales tax?
Zero Tax Rate States
Eight U.S. states currently have no state income tax whatsoever: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. New Hampshire, the ninth state on our list, only taxes interest and dividend income.
Tennessee levies tax on other items, outside of income. This is how they collect money to pay for municipal items such as first responder services, infrastructure, roads, schools, and more.
Oregon does not have a general state sales tax. The personal income tax is the largest source of state tax revenue, expected to account for 86% of the state's General Fund for the 2021–2023 biennium. Oregon's taxable income is closely connected to federal taxable income.
Nevada is the most tax-friendly state, where residents pay $2,949. Illinois is the least tax-friendly state; there, families pay $12,472 in annual taxes. For a typical middle-class family, the tax burden difference between living in the highest-tax state (Illinois) and the lowest-tax state (Nevada) is $9,524 per year.
Eight US states have no income tax. While New Hampshire has no tax on earned wages, the state does charge a flat individual income tax rate of 4% on investment earnings. Five states including Alaska, Delaware, Montana, Oregon, and New Hampshire, have no state sales tax.
- Connecticut: The Best State Financially for Families. Among all states, Connecticut provides the most optimal conditions for a comfortable lifestyle, with the average two-earner household earning $144,146 a year. ...

- Maryland. ...
- New Jersey. ...
- Virginia.
The answer is that each state is different, but they all offset their lack of income tax with revenue from other types of taxes, such as sales and property taxes. Let's examine some of these other taxes and revenue sources and how all of the nine states without income tax use them to fund their government.
Under the program, qualifying homeowners age 65 or older, disabled homeowners, as well as disabled veteran homeowners or their surviving spouses receive tax relief from the taxes due on their property.
States with no income taxes save residents money — on their income taxes. However, many states without income taxes can be expensive in other ways. They might have a higher sales tax, higher property taxes, and/or a higher cost of living.
How does Delaware make money with no sales tax?
Delaware does not impose a state sales tax; however, Delaware does impose a tax on the gross receipts of most businesses. Gross receipts are the total amount received from the sale of goods or services sold by the business. Gross receipts tax rates range from 0.1037% to 2.0736%, depending on your business activity.
Originally Answered: Could the government fund itself without taxation ? Absolutely — and in fact, the US was originally designed to be funded with very little taxation at all. For well over a century, the US functioned almost entirely on tariffs (which may be a form of taxation, but not like you're asking about).
Montana has a 6.75 percent corporate income tax rate. Montana does not have a state sales tax and does not levy local sales taxes. Montana's tax system ranks 5th overall on our 2023 State Business Tax Climate Index. Each state's tax code is a multifaceted system with many moving parts, and Montana is no exception.
