Does Florida Have a State Income Tax? No, Florida is one of nine states that do not tax the income of their residents. The others are Alaska, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming. In addition, Washington and New Hampshire tax investment income, but not wage income.
The analysis also explored how each state's tax-friendliness rating related to its population growth from 2021 to 2022. (Learn more in the Methodology section.) Nevada is the most tax-friendly state, where residents pay $2,949. Illinois is the least tax-friendly state; there, families pay $12,472 in annual taxes.
Who pays more sales tax rich or poor?
The 20% of California families with the lowest incomes pay 7.4% of their incomes in combined state and local sales and excise taxes, compared to 0.8% for the richest 1%.
The top 10%, with incomes of at least $169,800, pay about three-quarters of the nation's tax bill, the analysis found. Although most Americans believe the middle class bears the heaviest tax burden, it's actually the top 1% who pay the highest federal tax rate, at 25.9%, the Tax Foundation analysis found.
Oregonians have had many opportunities to vote to have a sales tax, but except for very special forms of sales tax, always voted against them. Many of the things that in other states would be paid for by a sales tax are paid for by personal income tax and property tax.
The state's 6% goes to a few different places. The majority of that money, 3.9375%, goes to the general fund that California's government uses to finance itself. Another 1.0625% goes toward a Local Revenue Fund that the state established in 2011. The money in this fund pays for public safety programs and services.
Hawaii. Hawaii is ranked among the states with the lowest or no sales tax. The state has a statewide sales tax rate of 4% and a local tax rate of 0.5%, as of January 2024. According to the US Census Bureau, the population of the state is 1,435,138, as of 2023.

- South Dakota (7.03%)
- Montana (7.33%)

Shaylee: So, Montana is one of five states that doesn't have a statewide sales tax, meaning the state and most local governments collect most of their revenue through income and property taxes. Some argue that taxing sales spreads the tax burden around and alleviates putting too much pressure on one revenue source.
Do Texans pay more taxes than California?
“Our tax rates, again, are lower than the state of Texas,” the governor said. “I just want to remind everybody out there, 95% of Texans pay higher taxes than Californians.” Newsom noted that while the state's tax rates on the very wealthy are among the nation's highest, “not everybody lives in that rarified world.”
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire*, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not tax income.
Florida primarily makes up for its lack of an income tax with its sales tax, which generates around 80% of the state's revenue. Florida's sales tax is imposed on services and goods, and both the state and county levy a certain percentage.
