Which US state has lowest sales tax?
Alaska sales tax
Colorado has the lowest statewide sales tax rate of 2.9%. The local sales tax rates for the top five states remain unchanged, with Alabama having the highest local tax rate of 5.29%. States such as Minnesota and Wisconsin witnessed a decline in rankings since July 2023, because of the local tax hikes in major cities.
The following five states currently have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. We take a closer look at those states in this guide. A financial advisor can help you minimize your taxes over the long term.
States with the lightest tax burden:

Portland, Oregon, and Anchorage, Alaska, have no state or local sales taxes. Richmond, Virginia has 5.3 percent state sales tax. Honolulu, Hawaii, has a low sales tax rate of 4.5 percent, but the tax applies broadly to goods and services when compared with sales tax from other locations.
- Georgia: 4% sales tax rate.
- Hawaii 4% sales tax rate.
- New York: 4% sales tax rate.
- Wyoming: 4% sales tax rate.

5 States With The Highest Sales Tax
California (7.25%) Indiana (7.00%) Mississippi (7.00%) Rhode Island (7.00%)
Oregonians have had many opportunities to vote to have a sales tax, but except for very special forms of sales tax, always voted against them. Many of the things that in other states would be paid for by a sales tax are paid for by personal income tax and property tax.
What is Hawaii's sales tax rate? Hawaii does not have a sales tax; instead, we have the GET, which is assessed on all business activities. The tax rate is 0.15% for Insurance Commission, 0.5% for Wholesaling, Manufacturing, Producing, Wholesale Services, and Use Tax on Imports For Resale, and 4% for all others.
- Tacoma, Washington (10.3%)
- Chicago, Illinois (10.25%)
- Fremont, California (10.25%)
- Long Beach, California (10.25%
- Oakland, California (10.25%)
- Seattle, Washington (10.25%)
- Birmingham, Alabama (10%)
- Baton Rouge, Louisiana (9.95%)
What is the most tax friendly state to live in?
The analysis also explored how each state's tax-friendliness rating related to its population growth from 2021 to 2022. (Learn more in the Methodology section.) Nevada is the most tax-friendly state, where residents pay $2,949. Illinois is the least tax-friendly state; there, families pay $12,472 in annual taxes.
Alaska is widely regarded as the best state for taxes in the United States.
Unsurprisingly, the states with no state income taxes at all ended up scoring pretty highly. Those eight states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.
1. Bridgeport, Connecticut. As one of the wealthiest cities in America, Bridgeport carries the highest overall tax rate in the nation. Wealthy taxpayers earning over $150,000 per year are on the hook for up to 22% in state and local taxes.
Himachal Pradesh has one of the lowest rates in India.
Shaylee: So, Montana is one of five states that doesn't have a statewide sales tax, meaning the state and most local governments collect most of their revenue through income and property taxes. Some argue that taxing sales spreads the tax burden around and alleviates putting too much pressure on one revenue source.
The answer was, “New Hampshire has such an antiquated tax system with the property tax, that there is no money to meet needs in communities that have to be funded through the state.”
Alabama's low property taxes are in large part a product of the state's tough-to-change constitution. As a result of that, state and local governments can't raise the money they need. So they turn instead to tax measures that are easier to pass. They raise sales taxes, and sin taxes.
Sales tax is added to the price of taxable goods or services and collected from the purchaser at the time of sale. Florida's general state sales tax rate is 6% with the following exceptions: Retail sales of new mobile homes - 3% Amusem*nt machine receipts - 4%
Oregon does not have a general state sales tax. The personal income tax is the largest source of state tax revenue, expected to account for 86% of the state's General Fund for the 2021–2023 biennium. Oregon's taxable income is closely connected to federal taxable income.
Are cars tax free in Oregon?
There is no sales tax on any vehicle purchased in Oregon.
Oregon Tax Rates, Collections, and Burdens
Oregon has a 6.60 percent to 7.60 percent corporate income tax rate and levies a gross receipts tax. Oregon does not have a state sales tax and does not levy local sales taxes. Oregon's tax system ranks 24th overall on our 2023 State Business Tax Climate Index.
Alaska does not have an individual income tax. Alaska has a 2.0 to 9.40 percent corporate income tax rate. Alaska does not have a state sales tax, but has a max local sales tax rate of 7.50 percent and an average combined state and local sales tax rate of 1.76 percent.
Compared to many other cities in the United States, Las Vegas often boasts a lower overall tax burden. While the sales tax rate is 8.38%, there are no additional state income taxes in Nevada. This absence of state income tax can contribute to a more favorable tax environment for residents.
Some states do not tax Social Security or income, which could appeal to retirees. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming stand out for their tax-friendly policies and other amenities that retirees may enjoy.
